Facts about St. Nicholas
Did you know that December 6 is the feast day of St. Nicholas of Myra in the Eastern and Latin Churches? He served as bishop of Myra in the Lycian region of Asia Minor (now part of Turkey) in the first half of the 4th century. He was born between 270 and 286 AD. Relics of Saint Nicholas of Myra can be found in Germany in Worms, Asmannshausen, Halberstadt, and Edenstetten.
December 6, the saint's feast day, is associated with many customs. Some were originally related to the church's lectionary. On December 6, the lectionary reading of the parable of the talents was mandatory. The well-known custom of St. Nicholas asking children whether they have been good and pious goes back to this parable.
Since 2013, an international St. Nicholas meeting has been held in Missen-Wilhams at the beginning of December each year. The St. Nicholas performers walk through the village to the parish church. At the end of the service, they are blessed with a St. Nicholas relic and sent out for their ministry. Afterwards, they meet to exchange experiences. In 2016, this meeting led to the founding of the St. Nicholas Brotherhood of Missen.
