Photocoupler
A photocoupler/optocoupler optically links, via a transparent isolating material, an infrared LED and a photodetector within one housing. Usually this detector is a phototransistor or a photodiode with some additional amplifiers. These devices are used for galvanic separation and protection of the inputs of microcontrollers.
