Photointerrupters

Photointerrupters consist of an infrared LED and one or two phototransistors mounted in one package. The components are arranged in such a way that the infrared LED and the photodetector face each other, with the detection slot between them. Any object entering the light path interrupts the beam and is detected by the phototransistor. Generally a slot aperture is mounted in front of the phototransistor to increase the resolution. The components are available in a wide range of geometries in terms of size, width of slot, position of gap, position of the optical axis, etc. For the detection of movement direction, photo interrupters are available with two phototransistors.
